CRISIS IN CONGO

BBC INTERVIEW with WAL Founder Matthew Leutwyler describing his ordeal during the M23 occupation of Goma, DR Congo.

On jan 21, 2025, as the ongoing conflict in the region took a dramtic turn, our tiny orphanage on the outskirts of Goma, DR Congo was attacked and Rebecca and our 42 children had to flee. Musa, one of our teenagers living there tried to grab clothes for the younger girls and was shot in the head. The following day, Mathew Leutwyler and Jerry Kabango drove across the border from Rwanda to meet up with our friend and boxing legend Kibomango to rescue the children and find a safe place for them. Unfortunately, the fighting between M23 and Congolese forces exploded into Goma trapping them there and Kibomango was killed in the chaos. This interview with Matthew sheds more light on the situation.
