What We Do

Founded in 2012, We Are Limitless (WAL) is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization committed to providing education, healthcare, and basic needs to vulnerable children in Rwanda and DR Congo. Over the past 12 years, WAL has supported more than 200 children and young adults, offering resources that empower them to achieve their potential.

WAL operates as a nearly 100% volunteer-run charity, with only one full-time paid employee based in Rwanda to manage on-the-ground operations. Our lean structure ensures that the majority of our resources directly benefit the children we serve.

WAL is financed primarily through individual donations raised during two annual online drives. However, since the pandemic, donations have significantly decreased, making it increasingly difficult to sustain operations, keep students in school, and ensure housing for vulnerable children. Founder Matthew Leutwyler has personally covered any budget shortfalls to maintain the organization’s mission.

In addition to educational opportunities, WAL provides healthcare services for children with serious medical challenges, including HIV and sickle cell disease. These programs ensure students receive regular treatment, medications, and essential care.

In Rwanda, WAL currently supports 42 children, aged 7 to 21, with 80% being girls. These children attend high quality boarding schools across the country. Additionally, two students are pursuing university degrees in the United States, and another is preparing to attend university in Romania in August 2025.

In 2020, WAL expanded its impact to DR Congo with the construction of Rebecca’s House, a housing facility near Goma that provides shelter, meals, and access to education for 45 children. This facility is managed by Rebecca Umutoniwase, a Congolese woman whose dedication to supporting vulnerable children inspired WAL to create this space. However, the ongoing crisis in East Congo has heightened the need for external funding to address food shortages, rising costs, and security challenges.

Since 2018 our primary focus has been on supporting girls and young women in their quest for education.

Wage Increase

If a girl attends an additional year of primary school,
she’ll see her wages increase up to 20%... An additional year of secondary school, her wages could increase by 25%.

Health

When girls are educated, they are less likely to contract HIV, more likely to delay childbearing and vaccinate their children,

“Silver Bullet”

Carla Koppell of USAID, called female education a “silver bullet” for empowerment and progress.

Child Mortality

Children of educated mothers are twice as likely to survive past the age of five.

Most orphans in Rwanda are either a byproduct of genocide, have lost their families to HIV, or have been found abandoned by families unable to support them. Often, infants are found left in jungles or ditches to survive the elements or hopefully be found by an orphanage. “We Are Limitless” is working to raise funds and empower like-minded individuals to help better the lives of youth that deserve so much more than they have.

When a child is brought in to the WAL family they are given school tuition, housing, food, clothing, school supplies, medical insurance, birthday and Christmas gifts, and just about every other conceivable need that might be necessary to assure their success and happiness. We identify each child’s specific needs and place them in a school situation that offers them the greatest chance to succeed. If a child is better served at a school different than the one he is attending we will move them. If a child needs more individualized attention, we will provide a tutor. This is where WAL proves to be more like a family and less like a non-profit that is merely providing education for a child.
